A post vise is something that has been on my wishlist for quite some time now. I finally bit the bullet and ordered one from my buddy Andrew of Blacksmith Tools. This one in particular is a large 6” jaw model. I wanted the stand to be solid enough for whatever work I could throw at it and yet compact enough to be moveable, so I settled on a 5/8”x30” diameter plate which was cut and sent to me via Mike Peebles at Speedy Metals. I was also able to use some of the leftover 8x8 tubing from the industrial table I built last year for the upright, which I also filled with sand—both to increase weight as well as to dampen the resonance.
The removable tool rail is something that I came up with during the build itself. The reason I want to me able to move and remove them is for engraving work, as I often have to rotate around the vise while engraving.
